Content: Prussian Major von Tellheim in the Seven Year War has advanced from his own pocket the contributions which were levied by the Saxons; he is accused and taken to court in 1763 and is now awaiting the outcome of the trial. Minna von Barnhelm, his Saxon fiancé,  turns up unexpectedly. On the grounds of his financial hardship and of his dishonourable situation, Tellheim sees himself unable to honour his promise of marriage.
